The eyes and the mystery of the pupils

Eckhard Hess was a psychologist and ophthalmologist whose wife told him something that caught his attention as she watched him read in bed. Enraptured by her interesting reading, Mrs. Hess noticed that the pupils of her husband’s eyes dilated at certain moments and then contracted again.

Dr. Eckhard Hess, intrigued by what his insightful wife had observed, had no qualms about doing a little research the next day with his students at the University of Chicago in 1943. The test was simple: he offered them a book, and between the pages , there were some pictures of Playboy girls. Immediately, the unexpected visual impact caused a fascinating pupil dilation.

Eckhard demonstrated that the autonomic nervous system, in charge of regulating involuntary actions, is closely related to emotional power. When through our eyes we perceive information considered interesting – as was the case – or we have a pleasant conversation, our pupils dilate. The same happens when our gaze suddenly “stumbles” on something exciting, that we like or attracts us: the eyes are filled with this black sea of ​​our pupils.

The mystery of the pupils has always been a fascinating subject that teaches us basically two things: the first is that dilation doesn’t just happen due to lack of light. The second is that the pupils are intimately related to our emotions and their dilation is an involuntary act, it is the purest and most naive reflection of our pulsations and feelings.

When the look is sincere, it becomes a bridge between two souls

A person’s gaze can be like a map of affection, calm and peace that connects immediately with our interior. At other times, the ocean of your iris represents the paths of dismay and disappointment. The eyes not only tell a lot about our personal stories, but also how we relate to others.

The way we look is a form of feedback and, in turn, a sign of synchronism – or lack thereof – between two interlocutors. Thanks to several tests carried out over several years, it was found that women are much more adept at deciphering another person’s emotions and intentions just by interpreting their gaze.

Both men and women obtained similar scores when interpreting non-verbal body language. However, the eyes are always that hidden universe, but loaded with meanings, that a skilful feminine gaze intuits and deciphers.
