You’re Not Depressed, You’re Distracted

you are not depressed, you are distracted

The writer Facundo Cabral wrote what we could call “an account of life” : “You are not depressed, you are distracted”. In it, he deals with everything that escapes us and all the innocence of the first few times completely spoiled by bad experiences.

He speaks of hope, of struggle, of knowing how to redefine pain, of facing life responsibly, but not so seriously, because that’s when we start to confuse things. It speaks of surrounding ourselves with suitable people and of being able, again, to give meaning to our existence only through love and contemplation. Says that, if you’re living, nothing really matters that much…

We often think that we are sad and feel unhappy about something concrete… Because what we thought was the engine of our life ends up disappearing and, consequently, we have nothing to fight for. We feel depressed when we don’t appreciate what we have around us.

We feel depressed when we don’t see what’s around us

Throughout the story, Cabral says that what we think is depression is often just a distraction from the rest of the world. He uses artistic and poetic perspectives, because that’s his job. However, from the point of view of Psychology, their sayings are logical and make a lot of sense.

Sometimes we are so sorry for something that we end up feeling insecure and full of emptiness and existential struggles. We are sad for the past and so we start to avoid incredible situations. We postpone an outing with friends, we avoid meeting new people, we don’t want to fight for a new job and, little by little, we fall into depression.

We get distracted by the negative

Our thoughts and cognitive schemes evaluate the world in a negative way , and if we don’t do anything, we won’t be able to reinforce and change things. We are used to the shadow and this monotonous but comfortable melancholy. We believe there is no other way to live life. We watch television and immediately think that the world is not at all interesting—because that is the real world for us, since we haven’t really gone out to see it for a long time.

So we’re not really depressedwe’re distracted by the negative things that don’t let us see the magnificence of the world. Distracted with people who don’t let themselves fall in love with anything, distracted by ridiculous prejudices, memories and lack of love.

Let go of this distraction with the things that make you depressed

Suffering is a waste of time. Of course, no one can avoid pain throughout life—and it can be paralyzing, like losing loved ones, for example. However, prolonged suffering is an option we can choose to live with or ignore.

Not being distracted by the negative is an option,  as it occupies our lives and prevents us from actually living things. With it, you end up forgetting to take care of yourself, keep using victimhood to explain everything that goes wrong, and of course, you get depressed.

You’re not depressed, you’re turning a blind eye to the affection and love around you, and you’re too busy looking for ulterior motives and misfortunes in everything and everyone. You’re busy thinking about the guilt, the one you were made to carry,  and you only live not to enjoy the world that will always be the same, whether it’s with you or not. You are the one who needs to decide on a way to face life!

You are not depressed, you are distracted. But remember that innocence excites us, because everything is a mirror and everything is a party. But for that, we cannot take any baggage, that negative baggage with people and ideas that are totally unnecessary.

Now you know… All of this ends up distracting us, so you’re not depressed. You are simply distracted.
